KINGSTON: West Indies defeated South Africa by 28 runs during the first T20I against South Africa in Kingston on Thursday.
Independent all-rounder Brandon King showed his mettle by scoring 79 off 45 deliveries in place of regular captain Rovman Powell in the Indian Premier League (IPL) win.
Windies won against South Africa thanks to a brilliant innings played by King, who hit six sixes and six boundaries. The team reached 175 for 8 in 20 overs.
Andile Pehlukwayo and Ottniel Baartman each scored three goals for the visitors.
Despite the efforts of South African batsman Reeza Hendricks, who scored his 15th T20I half-century, the team could only manage 147 runs against the victorious side. Hendricks scored 87 off 51 balls.
West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie (3/25) and fast bowler Matthew Ford (3/27) contributed to our team’s success with impressive bowling performances.
Despite the efforts of the South African players in the innings, the team continued to lose wickets from time to time.
King won the Player of the Match award for his strategic approach on a complex pitch.
“I know the situation, it’s an advantage,” said King, who plays at home at the Sabina Park Ground. “We know we have to be tougher against the new ball, and it will be tougher later on.
To prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup, both teams need to perform well in the match in Kingston and learn their skills and strategies.
