DUESSELDORF : Freezing rain in central and southern Germany grounded hundreds of flights and hampered train activity, with the weather office warning of treacherous roads and severe snowfall.
At Frankfurt Airport, 570 of the 1,047 scheduled arrivals and departures were canceled, while 254 flights were scratched at Munich Airport, and a tiny airport in the southern city of Saarbruecken halted operations entirely.
The weather service warned of an exceptional risk of black ice and heavy snowfall in the affected areas till Thursday.

Deutsche Bahn, the German rail operator, warned of delays and cancellations due to the winter weather, and said it was reducing the top speed of its high-speed ICE trains to 200 km/h as a precaution.
