Karachi: Pakistan all-rounder Younis Khan has backed Fakhar Zaman as the Green men’s captain.
Appearing on a local channel’s sports show, the former captain came out in support of Zaman and said that he would be a candidate for captaincy.
“Why can’t Fakhar Zaman be the captain of the side and not a player? He has not performed well in the last 50+ World Cups? Who is the player who gives us hope? Zaman starts the 2023 World Cup in India and looks to match Pakistan’s success in the second round turned , the boom was debated in Pakistan, but it was too late for the tournament,” he said. .
Zaman was part of the team that won the Champions Trophy in 2017 under Sarfaraz Ahmed. During the tournament, he formed a partnership with Azhar Ali and scored against India in the final.
“Who is the one player in the side who gives up the opener and takes four or five or six bats? Who sacrifices his place? Fakhar Zaman! Why can’t you make him captain?” – He said.
Pakistan is currently led by Babar Azam in white-ball cricket and is leading the home team from the T20 World Cup 2024.
Babar was appointed as the team captain in 2019 and stepped down after the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Shaheen Shah Afridi was given the reins to lead the team in 2024, but Babar was appointed as the team captain before the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Pakistan’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 saw Babar and Co. lost to USA in the opening match of the event and then won against India. Both the matches were easy wins for Pakistan but the team lost.
Pakistan managed to beat Canada and Ireland but it was not enough to survive in the tournament.
