ANKARA: At least four people were injured after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit the island of Java on Sunday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (UMCG) said.
The epicenter of the earthquake is about 150 km (93.2 mi) from Garut, West Java, at a depth of 68.3 km.
Some buildings were damaged by the earthquake.
The United States Geological Survey said an earthquake of 6.1 on the Richter scale hit the capital Jakarta and the West Java city of Bandung, but authorities did not issue a tsunami warning.
Indonesia often experiences earthquakes due to its location in the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, a tectonic belt of volcanoes and earthquakes.
In January 2021, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the island of Sulawesi, killing more than 100 people and leaving thousands homeless.
In 2018, nearly 2,200 people died after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake and a separate tsunami.
