SYDNEY: Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa is hopeful of a comeback in Test cricket as he believes there is still a “real” chance for him to play red-ball cricket.
Zampa, 32, has been Australia’s most consistent white-ball toner. He was part of the teams that won the T20 World Cup 2021 and the ODI World Cup 2023 and contributed greatly in both the tournaments.
After playing a lot of white-ball cricket over the years, the 32-year-old is keen to make a Test comeback.
“I realistically think I still have a chance to play Test cricket,” he told the Final Word podcast. “If I was playing a lot of Shield cricket right now with the way I’m bowling I think I’d be fine, I’d do really well. The few games I’ve played in the last couple of years shows that.
“Even if I get picked for the upcoming subcontinental tours, people will say, his record average is 46 with the ball, it’s not good enough, people will say I’m sure, but if they pick me, I’ll know how I feel about bowling, it will that’s fine,” he said.
Recently, Zampa withdrew from the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Major League Cricket (MLC) as he wanted to stay fit whenever Australia called him to play. The leg-spinner has categorically stated that he will always favor the national team over franchise cricket.
“I was lucky to … be part of a World Cup winning team,” he said. I want to play for Australia as long as I can, the feeling of success in this team is something I want more. I’m lucky enough to have signed a two-year contract with Australia and it’s on the basis that I want to play every game for Australia. It meant I had to make some decisions about franchise cricket.”
Zampa is likely to be in action when Australia take on Scotland in a three-match T20I series before taking on England in the white-ball series.
