NEW DELHI: One person died and eight others were injured when the roof of the newly renovated terminal building at the New Delhi International Airport partially collapsed in heavy rain on Friday.
In pictures posted online, a giant steel vehicle is crushed on the runway of the airport’s Terminal 1, one of several projects inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the country’s general elections in March.
The terminal is only used for domestic flights, and airport officials said all flights departing from it were canceled until noon.
“Due to heavy rain this morning, part of the roof collapsed … around 5 am,” said a statement posted online.
“Emergency personnel are working to provide all assistance and medical care to the victims.”
Other terminals are operating normally, as are arrivals at Terminal 1.
New Delhi has been hit by heavy rains in recent days as the annual monsoon approaches the Indian capital.
“Eight people were injured, one person died. The rescue operation has been completed,” Director of the Cirebon Fire Service Atul Garg told AFP.
