Islamabad: The Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) on Friday launched a partnership to promote green development, environmental protection and food security in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of Ethiopia.
The partnership was announced at a seminar titled “Ethio-Pakistani Brotherhood on Green Heritage Initiative” jointly organized by the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad and SDPI. He was accompanied by H.E. Climate Change Coordinator Prime Minister Romina Khurshid Alam, H.E. Dr. Abid Qayyum Sulehri, Executive Director, SDPI, government officials, civil society and media.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia to Pakistan H.E. Jamal Baker praised Abdulla for his efforts as the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change and wished him success in supporting all efforts to reduce the adverse effects of climate change.
H.E. Ambassador Jamal Baker Abdulla said that this initiative is supported by H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed, FDR Prime Minister of Ethiopia who came to power in 2018 and made Ethiopia a peaceful, stable, prosperous, eco-friendly, sustainable and green. It was officially commissioned in 2023 at the Embassy in Pakistan.
He announced that Ethiopia is aggressively implementing green development initiatives, starting with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and ending the import of fuel-based vehicles with the goal of net zero by 2050.
Commenting on this initiative, he said that the human-nature relationship, fostering synergy and cooperation for common goals, respecting humanity and political, economic, social and environmental well-being has various components.
He said, mass media mobilization, community ownership and leadership by the country’s top leadership is one of the reasons for the success of the initiative.
The Ambassador said that the FDR Embassy is proud to partner with SDPI and the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change and that the initiative will start in the mega cities of Punjab, followed by Sindh and other provinces.

H.E Romina Khurshid Alam, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change and Environment addressed the seminar by phone, and Ambassador H.E. Jamal Baker Abdullah for acting as a bridge between Ethiopia, Pakistan and Africa.
“We are ready to cooperate and cooperate to promote the Green Heritage initiative. In addition, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination is working to establish the International Green Parliamentary Caucus and we need Ethiopia’s help and where we can work together to protect mother nature and learn from each other’s success- each,” said H.E. Romina Khurshid Alam.
Dr. Abid Qayyum Suleri, Executive Director of SDPI, said that the Ethiopian Ambassador implemented a pioneering Green Legacy initiative in Pakistan that has transformed the flora and fauna of Ethiopia and has had a great impact on the people in terms of employment and food security.
He said the Ethiopian government is sharing its success story with other developing countries facing the climate crisis to achieve resilience against environmental degradation.
Finally, the Executive Director, SDPI handed over a memorandum to the Rector and the latest publication of SDPI.
