MUMBAI: Renowned singer Pankaj Udhas has passed away at the age of 72. His team confirmed the news and said, “Pankaj Sir was suffering from prolonged illness and was not feeling well for the last few days. He passed away this morning around 11. Breach Candy hospital,” reports India Today.
His daughter Nayaab Udhas shared a statement expressing the family’s grief: “It is with a very heavy heart that we have to announce the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on February 26, 2024 due to prolonged illness. The Udhas (sic) family.”
A respected Indian ghazal singer, Udhas has mesmerized audiences with his soulful renditions throughout his illustrious career. Born on May 17, 1951 in Gujarat, the scribe started his musical journey at a young age and rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s.
Apart from his musical prowess, Udhas has been recognized for his philanthropic initiatives, actively supporting charitable causes and welfare projects. Notably, his 1989 album Nabeel became a bestseller and the first copy was auctioned for Rs 1 million, with the proceeds going to the Cancer Relief Association. The ghazal maestro also dedicated himself to the Parents Thalassemia Unit.
