ISLAMABAD: Chairman National Task Force and Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari said on Friday that the government is committed to comprehensive reforms in the power sector to increase its efficiency.
Speaking to the media after chairing a meeting of the National Task Force on Implementation of Structural Reforms in the Power Sector, the minister said the task force reviewed the stocks of all Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and their generation capacity. The task force also discussed various issues facing the country’s power sector, he added.
He said that the National Working Group strongly objected to the propaganda of power tariff increase. Persistent propaganda is deliberately being spread that electricity prices are increasing, he added.
The Minister said that virtually there has been a reduction in electricity tariff by 77 paisa while unfortunately various newspapers and TV channels have given the impression that the tariff has been increased. He said that yesterday the energy regulator – National Electricity and Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) issued the fuel adjustment cost notification (FCA) for June.
The adjustment for the billing month of August was Rs 2.56 per unit compared to Rs 3.33 for July, so the consumer would get a relief of 77 paisa per unit, he said.
Awais said that the government is making maximum efforts to solve the problems of the power sector and added that we will work in the same spirit to provide relief to the masses. He said that people will hear good news in this regard in the next few weeks.
He said that efforts will also be made to give a true picture to the people through an effective communication strategy with the cooperation of all concerned departments.
