Athens: Greece’s conservative government on Thursday was acquitted in parliament of trying to launch an investigation into the train crash that rocked the country last year.
The motion of no confidence was rejected, with 159 against and 141 in favor of the 300-member parliament.
The conservative government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has a majority in parliament and is expected to defeat a bid by the socialist PASOK party on Tuesday.
The move comes after key audio recordings from the night of the February 2023 crash that killed 57 people were allegedly edited, according to the newspaper.
Opposition parties accuse the government of supporting the government to reinforce its chosen narrative that human error is to blame for the conflict.
“Public opinion has reached the irreversible conclusion that you are focused on covering up the train disaster,” said Nikos Pappas, head of parliament for the main opposition party Syriza, on Wednesday.
