Harris calls on Black South Carolina voters to defend rights

4 Harris calls on Black South Carolina voters to defend rights

MYRTLE BEACH: Vice President Kamala Harris commemorated the attacks on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, in South Carolina, the site of the state’s Democratic primary on February 3.

In a speech near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, on Friday, Biden harshly criticized Republican front-runner Donald Trump’s conduct on the anniversary of the horrific attacks. Harris then spoke on that day.

At the annual retreat of the 7th Episcopal District AME Church Women’s Missionary Society at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the vice president gave the keynote address.

“On January 6, 2021, three years ago today, a crowd stormed the US Capitol, attempting to alter the outcome of a free and fair election with ruthless force and intimidation. Millions of Americans’ votes were attempted to be overruled,” Harris stated.

“On that day, we saw violence, chaos, and lawlessness, but some so-called leaders still tried to mislead and gaslight by saying it was a peaceful protest,” she stated.

During his first trip to Iowa of the year on Friday, Trump responded to Biden. “Not a single thing has improved while Joe Biden was crooked. At the state rally, Trump addressed several hundred fans, saying, “Everything’s a mess.”

South Carolina was pushed to the front of the party’s nomination schedule, ahead of Iowa and New Hampshire, because Biden believes the state helped propel him to the White House in 2020.

With thousands of churches and millions of members worldwide, the African Methodist Episcopal church, also known as the AME, was founded in the late 1700s in response to racial discrimination in an American Methodist church. On Monday, Biden will give a speech at the Mother Emanuel AME in South Carolina, the scene of nine members’ deaths in 2015 at the hands of a white nationalist.

Polls reveal that Biden is losing some support from Black voters across the country, despite the fact that he is not up against any formidable opposition for the Democratic presidential candidacy. In a state where Black people make up the majority of Democratic voters, a high turnout in the primary would allay concerns about his electability within the party.

In front of hundreds of predominantly Black women church leaders, Harris argued that the audience’s support had propelled Biden to the White House, expanded postpartum care, and resulted in the replacement of lead pipes in predominantly Black neighborhoods. She claimed that some Republicans wanted to restrict access to voting rights and healthcare for women.

“Let’s resist raising our hands. It’s time to get our hands dirty. We adore our nation and were born for a time like this,” Harris remarked.

According to the FBI, three federal arrest warrants for three fugitives from January 6 were carried out early on Saturday at a ranch in Groveland, Florida. It stated that Joseph Daniel Hutchinson, Olivia Michele Pollock, and Jonathan Daniel Pollock had been placed under arrest. On January 8, they are expected to appear in federal court in Ocala, Florida.

Storm may not be wintry enough to end New York City’s snow drought

NEW YORK: The winter storm system that started moving across the most populous US metropolis and along the East Coast on Saturday may not bring an end to the unprecedented, two-year snow drought in New York metropolis this weekend.

Since February 13, 2022, a record-breaking 692 days have passed without more than 1 inch (2.54 cm) of snow falling in Manhattan’s Central Park, home to 8.5 million people.

However, as of Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., Central Park had received just 0.2 inches of precipitation, and the National Weather Service predicted that the storm will only accumulate 0.8 inches until it moves out to sea late on Sunday night.

“It’s already mixing into rain and it’s going to continue to do that,” he said.

Last winter, barely 2.3 inches (5.84 cm) of snow fell in New York metropolis, the least in recorded history in a metropolis where snowfall of more than a foot (30 cm) was, at least until recently, not uncommon.

The absence of snow in New York City, according to experts, is just one more example of how global weather patterns are being impacted by climate change. For instance, last summer saw a record-breaking period of intense heat in the US Southwest.

In addition, the weather service issued a warning about the risk of ice-glazed roadways and small urban floods.

Outside the city, up to 8 inches (20 cm) of snow were predicted for the northeastern region of New England, New Jersey, and interior parts of New York state, just north of Interstate 95. The weather service stated that up to a foot of snow could fall in certain places.

The federal and state officials warned the 16 million residents in the area under a winter storm watch to exercise caution since the storm’s snowfall could cover roads, bring down trees and power lines, make travel hazardous, and cause power outages.

As stronger snow pushed in on Saturday evening, up to 7 inches (18 cm) of snow were predicted for Boston, which has a population of roughly 650,000.

Parts of eastern California and the West Coast were also expected to get winter weather. The weather service warned that certain cities in the area could receive up to a foot (30 cm) of snow and wind gusts of more than 40 mph (64 kph), which could cause whiteout conditions on roads.
