DUBAI: The International Cricket Council announced on Monday that six Indian cricketers have been nominated to the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2023, with Rohit Sharma captaining the team. There are no Pakistani players on the list.
The team of the year is dominated by Australian and Indian stars who faced off in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final.
Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, continued his incredible record in ODI cricket with another great year with the bat in 2023, scoring 1255 runs at an average of 52.
Rohit was at his outstanding best for much of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, with his amazing innings of 131 against Afghanistan in Delhi standing out.
Shubman Gill cemented himself as Rohit Sharma’s chosen partner at the top of India’s batting order in early 2023, smashing 208 from only 149 deliveries against New Zealand in Hyderabad.
Gill reached triple figures in 50-overs on five occasions in 2023, and no player scored more runs (1584) than the outstanding right-hander during the calendar year.
Travis Head, an Australian player, has enormous talent and saves his best performances for the grandest stage of all. He shined throughout 2023, particularly during the 50-over World Cup in India, where he helped Australia win a record sixth title.
Head made a half-century and took two wickets in a Player of the Match performance in Australia’s World Cup semi-final triumph over South Africa, and then surpassed that effort by scoring an amazing 137 against India in the final to help Australia win the trophy.
Virat Kohli, India’s captain, had another solid 12 months in 2023, with just teammate Shubman Gill surpassing his total of 1377 runs.
Kohli scored three figures six times in 2023, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most international hundreds during India’s World Cup campaign and winning Player of the Tournament at the showcase event.
The ICC stated that no one came close to matching Mohammed Shami’s haul of four.
While Shami delivered a number of match-winning performances, his brilliant spell of 7/57 – the highest numbers for an India Men’s player in ODI history – in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Mumbai stood out the most.
