London: Italy’s Jasmine Paolini decided to cap a “crazy” run to Saturday’s Wimbledon final against Barbora Krejcik by winning her first Grand Slam title.
The 28-year-old player is the first Italian to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament on grass.
It is a stunning achievement for Paolini, who did not win a match at Tour level on grass 15 days ago in Eastbourne and had lost in the first round on her previous three visits to Wimbledon.
Until this year, she also failed to get past the second round of a Grand Slam.
But 2024 was a breakthrough campaign for Paolini, who reached her first Grand Slam final at the French Open before losing to world number one Iga Swiatek.
Even Paolini can’t believe her remarkable rise.
“You’re crazy, I’d say yes,” she said. “Yeah, I’m speechless. It’s just, yeah, you’re crazy,” said Paolini, who started her unexpected rise by finishing in the last 16 at the Australian Open in January.
“Two Grand Slam finals in a row was crazy to believe, wasn’t it?”
She admitted that anxiety could be an issue on center court this weekend, but she can take heart from a rough match against Vekic, who broke down in tears.
Paolini is the first woman to reach the finals of Roland Garros and Wimbledon since Serena Williams in 2016.
The final is only the second time Krejčíková and Paolini have met and their showdown will be a world away from their first encounter.
The pair met in the first round of qualifying for the 2018 Australian Open, with Krejčíková claiming a straight-set victory.
“It was a long time ago, it was a great way for both of us to reach the Wimbledon final,” said Krejciková.
After winning the French Open in 2021, Krejčíková will play the second Grand Slam final in her career.
The 28-year-old has struggled with back injuries and illness this year, winning just three singles matches in five months before finding her form at Wimbledon in remarkable style.
The two-time Wimbledon doubles champion is inspired by 1998 All England Club champion Jana Novotna, who worked as her coach before her death from cancer in 2017.
“She told me a lot of stories about her travels here and how she tried to win Wimbledon.
“I had many difficult periods. I never imagined that I could reach the Wimbledon final, that I could be a different player.”
