LAHORE: Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi’s recent misbehavior has irked coaches and board officials, leading to the possibility of strict action against him.
According to sources, Afridi’s misconduct was particularly evident during training at Headingley on the recent England tour.
Batting coach Mohammad Yousuf pointed out that Afridi bowled too many no-balls, to which the left-arm pacer curtly replied, “Let me practice for now and don’t talk in the middle.” This exchange of views between them led to a sharp confrontation.
Sources said the responsibility of maintaining discipline in the team rests with the managers and an investigation is underway to find out why no action was taken against Afridi’s misconduct.
In addition, the investigation deals with the formation of player lobbies in the team, which contributes to the negative atmosphere.
Coaches also reported the non-serious attitude of some players, which further worsened the team environment. This internal discord and lack of discipline among the players became significant problems for the team’s management.
The sources further added that Afridi may not be considered for the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh next month. In addition, two to three senior cricketers may be rested.
The plan is to give more opportunities to home performers in the home series against Bangladesh. A training camp will be held in Rawalpindi to prepare for the two Test matches.
