Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was wounded in a shooting after a government meeting, TASR news agency reported on Wednesday.
TASR quoted Lubos Blah, deputy speaker of parliament, as saying that Fico was shot dead.
Reuters reported that witnesses saw several shots fired and a man was detained by police.
A Reuters witness said he saw security officers push someone into a car and drive off.
The state agency could not immediately be reached for comment.
