People usually experience the condition while sitting, standing up or even while walking where there is a sudden popping and clicking sound from their bones, but experts suggest whether this is a cause for concern or not.
Daniel Wiznia, an orthopedic surgeon at the Yale School of Medicine, told HuffPost Monday, “Cavitation is when you have two surfaces creating a vacuum. The sound is created when the two joint surfaces separate and the joint fluid builds up almost like a little gas and that creates the sound.’
The expert went on to explain, “The patella as it tracks… can sometimes find a way where there’s a little ridge or bump in the cartilage in that track. This will cause a bit of cracking and that’s normal,” explained Wiznia.
It would be a problem if that popping was accompanied by pain, swelling, joint instability or something moving inside or around the knee, the New York Post reported.
Those suffering from this condition should consult a doctor.
Rarely, clicking indicates avascular necrosis, a condition where blood supply to the bone is cut off, resulting in knee pain and clicking.
It could also indicate crepitus, which occurs as the cartilage wears away and the two surfaces of the bone grind against each other.
“It can be loud and sometimes you can even feel it when you put your hands over your knee.
Wiznia noted that not all arthritis is painful or requires surgery to treat, and measures include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy and injection therapy.
